Policy and Procedure Manual

TITLE: TRAUMA CENTER BYPASS (REGION 2 TRAUMA PLAN)

OBJECTIVE:

To provide optimum care for all patients presenting to either the Emergency Department/Trauma Center.

PROCEDURE:

The Management of either BroMenn Regional Medical Center or St. Joseph Medical Center, Emergency Department/Trauma Center and the respective physician in charge of the emergency department, in concurrence with the hospital administrative representative, will notify appropriate area hospitals of their intention to go on trauma bypass. Trauma bypass requires that all ambulance traffic be diverted away from BroMenn Regional Medical Center or St. Joseph Medical Center. There is no mechanism for a partial bypass. See phone list attached. Included in this notification will be the anticipated period of time the Emergency Department/Trauma Center will remain on trauma bypass. Phone updates will be given to area hospitals every four hours.

Pre-hospital care providers will be notified by BroMenn Regional Medical Center or St. Joseph Medical Center designated staff members when the hospital goes on and off bypass. See attached phone list.

Telephone notification of the Level I Trauma Center will be made by a BroMenn Regional Medical Center or St. Joseph Medical Center designated staff member. Trauma bypass calls will be made to St. Francis Medical Center's Emergency Department Charge Nurse at (309) 655-2109.

The following form will be filled out with one copy sent to the Level I Trauma Center and one to the Trauma Coordinator.

Information to be reported includes:

1. Name of Emergency Department physician in charge who authorized the bypass.
2. The name of the individual(s) making the bypass notification calls.
3. The name of the individual notified at each agency.
4. The number of Emergency Department Physicians and nurses on duty.
5. The reason for the bypass.
6. The number of patients in the Emergency Department at the time bypass was initiated.
7. The number of critical patients in the Emergency Department at the time bypass was initiated.
